The world is heading for hydrogen, and for many, a large-scale hydrogen economy is essential to a clean energy future.

From production to consumption, the business case for hydrogen is growing and the hydrogen economy is emerging, yet to fully realize the potential, industry and governments must focus on four key areas to scale the hydrogen economy:

  • Safety – The scale of the future hydrogen society will be determined by success in managing safety. Find out how DNV is proving the safety case.
  • Infrastructure – The full benefits of a hydrogen economy will come as the energy carrier becomes an integrated part of world’s energy system. This will require new or adapted gas infrastructure, sector coupling with renewables and the electricity grid, and the adoption of hydrogen for a range of industries and applications. Discover how DNV is supporting the development of efficient, integrated hydrogen infrastructure.
  • Decarbonizing production  – Hydrogen must be decarbonized throughout its value chain to answer to climate change. This will require lowering the cost of electrolysis in order to scale green hydrogen, or scaling carbon capture and storage (CCS) to enable blue hydrogen. Get insights into how DNV is helping to decarbonize hydrogen production.
  • Policy, investment and strategy – Long-term policy commitments will be essential to building the hydrogen economy. In parallel, energy companies and investors need to understand the policy landscape and have insights into the technical and business aspects of hydrogen. Explore how DNV supports governments, industry, and investors with technical and market analysis.

Projects

  • Oil and gas

Testing hydrogen safety on HyStreet

Three ordinary-looking houses at DNV's Spadeadam Research and Testing facility are playing a central role in multi-million-dollar tests to prove the safety case for hydrogen.

Power2Gas

In the Netherlands, network operator Stedin is working with DNV on the Power2Gas project, to show that homes can be heated safely and efficiently with hydrogen. DNV manages the project and provides expert support for hydrogen technology.

H21

DNV is proving the safety case for a switch from natural gas to hydrogen in a domestic setting, as a partner in the H21 programme in the UK.

Zero-V

DNV joined several partners to assess the technical, regulatory and economic feasibility of a hydrogen fuel-cell coastal research vessel, and granted a Conditional Approval in Principle (CAiP).

Production and use of hydrogen in Norway

For Norwegian authorities, DNV mapped the role that hydrogen can play in Norway as part of a transition to a low carbon future towards 2030, and provided an up-to-date description of the market and technology status for hydrogen.
